On a September evening in 1842 the family and a handful of carefully chosen guests would have stood by respectfully, perhaps a little nervously, as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made their way to the table for dinner in the State Dining Room at Scone Palace
There, with the porcelain, crystal and silverware gleaming in the light of candles and lamps, the Queen dined with her loyal Scottish subjects. The other guests on this great occasion were the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch (the Queen’s lady-in-waiting), The Duchess of Norfolk, the Earl of Aberdeen, the Earl of Liverpool, Lord and Lady Kinnoull, Lord and Lady Kinnaird and the Prime Minister of the day, Sir Robert Peel.
As the evening wore on and the party relaxed, the 4th Earl of Mansfield might have taken a moment to congratulate himself on the splendid new doors, side tables, cabinets and Chippendale style chairs, all made of oak from the Estate and especially commissioned.
